Groundwater can build up in the soil when there is inadequate drainage and as hydrostatic pressure (water pressure within the soil) increases, pushing water further towards the surface and into cracks and crevices around the concrete foundation.

Water can enter your structure in several ways – including those cracks or small spaces in the foundation slab, retaining walls and around basement windows. The wall to floor joint is particularly vulnerable, even when you have a quality waterproofing membrane in place.

External factors, including adjacent construction, may also affect your water penetration, so while your basement might be above the water table level now – and staying dry – there is potential for that to change.
